As a mom I have felt my heart-strings tugged on by a variety of things that in the past wouldn’t impact me as much. I feel incredibly fortunate that my son does not have to want or worry about anything, but at the same time, I feel an incredible responsibility to ensure that other children have their wants (and needs!) fulfilled too. With the school year approaching, what better way to raise a well-rounded kid than instilling the spirit of giving back starting at a young age. If you’re like me and want to give back/spread awareness (with your young one in tow), below are some back-to-school efforts going on in Jersey City and neighboring towns.

1. Jonah Cares 

Who? Full disclosure – this is MY effort.

What? Through Jonah’s Cares, I hope to encourage the Jersey City community to make a meaningful contribution to the kids in Jersey City who need it the most. Here is what Ian Jonah  (my tot) and I are after: new backpacks, lunch boxes, pencils, pens, pink erasers, two-pocket folders, binders, loose-leaf paper , notebooks (both spiral & composition), scientific calculators, protractors, crayons, colored pencils, markers, calculators, rulers, pencil sharpeners with cover, pencil cases, glue sticks, scissors and index cards. Supplies are being donated to PS 22 for distribution to students in need.

Where? Drop off supplies at 10 Regent St, Jersey City, NJ (attention: Josie Morris) or donate via gofundme. Donations are being matched at 100%

2. Book & Clips

Who? Webb Elementary Books & Clips free back to school haircuts

What? Webb Elementary is hosting a books and clips event to encourage students to read in exchange for a free haircut. If you know a parent of a student who attends Webb Elementary, spread the news! See the flyer for more details!

3. HFA Fifth Annual Back to School Supplies Drive

Who? Hoboken Family Alliance (HFA)

What? HFA is committed to helping children succeed and ensuring every young person is ready to learn.  Children living at or below the poverty line will find it difficult to get enough to eat this summer as their parents struggle to keep the lights on and make rent – they simply cannot afford to buy backpacks and school supplies. Donations will go to children in need from the following organizations: In Jesus Names Charities, Division of Youth Family Services (DYFS) and York Street Project. For more info visit here.

Where? Big Fun Toys, 602 Washington Street, Hoboken (Mon-Sat. 10-7pm, Sun . 11-6 pm )

4. Tools 4 Schools by Community Foodbank NJ

Who? Community Foodbank NJ

What? Tools 4 Schools program provides free classroom supplies through Tools 4 Schools Resource Center, a free classroom supply store for teachers. Teachers from participating schools may shop for free twice each school year for supplies. Schools must have 70% or more of the students at this school qualify for assistance under the guidelines of the National School Lunch Program.
